West Shore Hospital Overbuild

The project consists of a three-story overbuild and a five-story addition on the east side of the existing West Shore Hospital. The overbuild portion of the project is above the existing PACU, OR suite, and Emergency Department and ties back into the third-floor ICU and patient rooms on the upper two floors. The five-story addition includes the expansion of the Emergency Department, Imaging, PACU, OR Suite, ICU, Med/Surg Patient wings, and a new Pharmacy. Multiple areas throughout the existing facility require renovations with the relocation and expansion of hospital services, including Central Sterile Processing, clinical spaces, and support areas. The project also requires new parking lots, an addition to the Central Utility Plant, and the relocation of the loop road around the hospital.

The project presents challenges to overcome including maintaining utility services to the hospital, working over and around the hospital service areas, deep excavations, and temporarily relocating ambulance and patient access points. Detailed planning and coordination will be paramount in maintaining the construction schedule while continuing to support the everyday activities of a functioning hospital. Benchmark has implemented a daily impact analysis report to inform hospital staff of construction-related activities and the potential impacts to each department. This open line of communication will assist Benchmark in the performance of the essential upgrades in the most sensitive areas of the hospital with limited disturbance to the patients and staff.
