Cancer Center at Hampden

The Cancer Center at Hampden project transformed a shell space at Hampton Medical Center into a cutting-edge facility dedicated to comprehensive cancer care. Throughout construction, the team faced significant challenges maintaining negative air pressure, given the limited exterior exhaust options and a constrained exterior frontage. To overcome these obstacles, an exterior anteroom was built for safe entry and exit, and a fan wall system with eight Super Vac fans was installed.

Flexibility and a collaborative spirit were key to the project’s success. The team frequently adapted plans, especially when shifting utility lines, to avoid disrupting sensitive hospital operations. Exceptional partnerships with design teams, particularly Flad and WSP, ensured quality at every stage. Benchmark assigned a dedicated quality control representative to monitor the linear accelerator vault work full-time and coordinated closely with the owner, design team, Penn State’s physicist, shielding trade partner, and third-party testing agency.

The Cancer Center offers a range of specialized services: radiation oncology featuring a linear accelerator vault and CT simulation, medical oncology with infusion bays, a breast care clinic, and a satellite pharmacy.
