Hershey Medical Center Laboratory Renovations

Benchmark partnered with Penn State Hershey Medical Center (PSHMC) to renovate and modernize four laboratory spaces within a fully operational research building. The project focused on enhancing research capabilities while ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations.

The renovation included updates to the Department of Medicine Lab (8,000 SF), Pediatric Hem/Onc Lab (2,860 SF), Derm & Autoclave Lab (4,043 SF), and C5734 & C5736 Lab (998 SF). Each space was designed to support cutting-edge research, incorporating open lab layouts, technician work areas, support offices, tissue culture rooms, cold and common equipment rooms, and casework installations.

Benchmark provided preconstruction and construction management services, including MEP coordination, virtual design & construction, casework coordination, and equipment integration. With a construction value of $6.3 million, the 28-month project required detailed procurement tracking to manage long-lead items and daily communication with stakeholders to ensure tenant safety.

The renovations introduced new mechanical systems tailored to laboratory needs, upgraded procedural and scope rooms, and optimized space for animal research. By implementing a GMP delivery method and collaborating with IKM Architects, LSY Architects, and Hiller Architectural Group, Benchmark successfully delivered a high-functioning laboratory environment that meets the evolving demands of medical research.
