Housing Development Corporation
The Lancaster-based Housing Development Corporation funded the Market Square Apartments project which was built to serve low-income seniors in the Reading area. This $2.3 million, 36,000 square foot project houses 54 apartments. The eight-month schedule was initially hampered when unsuitable soils were encountered. Considerable over-excavation and redesigned foundations were only a temporary setback. The construction of this facility is structural metal stud bearing with a Hambro joist floor system and wood truss roof. Each apartment has its own through-the-wall gas heat pump.
In 2014, Benchmark updated the exterior façade, replaced windows, installed a new roofing system along with solar panels and updated interior living spaces with flooring, appliances and lighting fixtures. Several units were reconfigured to meet ADA regulations.
