Regional Gastroenterology Associates of Lancaster

Beginning with a desire to be an independent entity and own their office space, the partners in the Regional Gastroenterology Associates of Lancaster invited Benchmark Construction Co, Inc. to manage the construction of their new Ambulatory Surgical Center. Located in Brownstown Commons, the new medical facility also fulfilled a need expressed by patients for services convenient to the northeastern section of Lancaster County. The new facility consists of 14,000 square feet of Ground Floor Space, as well as 7,000 square feet of unfinished basement space.

The Colonial design structure has a steel skeleton with metal stud in-fill walls. Its overlapping textures and patterns are evident in the exterior cornices, keystone arches, corbelled brick and brick columns. The mansard roof trusses are wood framed over the steel deck. Dual pane, argon filled, tinted glass, thermally broken windows provide the highest thermal insulating value currently available. The computer controlled building management system ensures the peak operating efficiency.

The interior of the facility is nearly evenly split between the Operatory Suite and the Clinical Suite. The Operatory Suite houses 4 Operating Rooms, 5 Intake Bays, 13 Post Operatory Care Beds, and 4 Step Down Recovery bays. Much different than the shared spaces of their previous home, the staff are treated to a spacious employee break room, conference room with movable partition, doctors lounge and offices, billing area and men’s and women’s staff locker rooms.

The Clinical side of the building consists of 11 Adult Examination rooms and 3 Pediatric Exam rooms. There was a large emphasis to create brightly colored spaces and exciting patterns for the Pediatric rooms in an attempt to ease the young patients’ fears (and also their parents’). The Pediatrics area also has segregated doctors’ offices and waiting areas.

With groundbreaking in November 2006, approximately 13% of the work was self-performed by Benchmark’s own work force. They were responsible for installation of concrete footings, wood blocking, windows, interior doors and hardware, firestopping at rated walls, casework and miscellaneous millwork. After eight months of construction, completion of the project one month ahead of schedule allowed the staff to relocate and begin operating out of their very own spacious facility by June 25, 2007.
