Lancaster General Hospital First Floor Endoscopy

In addition to the schedule, another major challenge on the Endoscopy Fit-out project was the design coordination, fabrication and installation of the unique radius feature wall in the Family Waiting Area. This 40 foot long, 6 foot high wall includes a 90 degree bend with a 15 degree outward cant. The wall is 6” wide at the base and 24” wide at the top. On top of the feature wall is a stainless steel rail system with a second matching rail system supported from the structure above the ceiling. That rail system holds multiple pieces of glass in-place, including some that are radius glass.

Benchmark Construction’s project personnel resolved this challenge by modifying the Architect’s original design and providing a structural steel support system welded to the floor structure below which is located in the ceiling space of a parking garage. Benchmark Construction retained the services of a Professional Engineer in designing this structural system to fully support the feature wall. Benchmark Construction’s design also includes an internal structural steel support system within the wall which was coordinated with the casework manufacturer as well as the stainless steel railing and glazing subcontractors.

Benchmark Construction also faced the unique challenge of completing this project directly beneath ten functioning operating rooms which were in continuous operation throughout the project. Special noise constraints were continuously observed by all the craftsmen on the jobsite. Any loud noise or vibration causing construction operations were cleared in advance with the operating room staff prior to any work occurring. Even with these procedures in place, there were numerous occasions where work had to cease as surgeons preformed delicate procedures. Upon completion of the procedure, clearance was given, and only then were workers allowed to return to their work.

Existing mechanical systems were extensively modified during the Endoscopy Fit-out project. These mechanical systems also served adjacent areas including; the Orthopedic Administrative Offices, the James Street Café, and the Lancaster General Hospital Reference Library. Benchmark installed temporary air conditioning units to service these areas as well as special air filters for infection control. These systems included temporary temperature controls for all of the individual spaces. These additional requirements added to an already tough environment of noise control and infection control barriers that are common in all hospital projects.

Even with all these obstacles to overcome the project was successfully completed ahead of schedule. Thus through the diligent work of the managers and craftsmen from Benchmark, the owner now has a new state-of the-art diagnostic facility, and he and the surrounding departments “didn’t feel a thing”.
